Oct 25 2026

Crochet cotton table runner in Ecru with lace shell stitch pattern

Today we're making a lacy crochet table runner with our 2mm Cotton Macrame Cord. The body is worked in Ecru with an open shell stitch, then finished with a Latte border and a soft fringe on both ends.

It's a relaxing weekend project for confident beginners. Watch the three video parts and follow the steps below to make your own.

Step-by-Step Tutorial

1. Get Your Cord Ready

Get Your Cord Ready

This runner uses two colors of our 2mm Cotton Macrame Cord: Ecru for the lacy body and Latte for the edging and fringe. The soft, braided cotton is easy to work with a 4.5 mm hook and gives the stitches a clean, defined look.

2. Make the Foundation Chain

Make the Foundation Chain

Make a slip knot and crochet a foundation chain in Ecru. The length of this chain sets the width of your runner, so lay it on the table and check it before you continue. Keep your tension relaxed so the first row isn't tight.

3. Work the First Shell Stitch Rows

Work the First Shell Stitch Rows

Start the open shell pattern along the chain. Each row is made of small groups of stitches with chain spaces between them, which creates the airy, lace-like holes. Follow Part 1 and Part 2 of the video for the exact stitch counts and turning chains.

4. Build Up the Body

Build Up the Body

Repeat the pattern row by row. After a few repeats the texture becomes easy to read and the work goes quickly. Lay the piece flat now and then to check that the edges stay straight. Keep going until the runner reaches the length you want.

5. Add the Latte Edging

Add the Latte Edging

Join the Latte cord at a corner and crochet a neat border all the way around the runner. The darker edge frames the pattern and makes the corners look crisp.

6. Attach the Fringe

Attach the Fringe

Cut pieces of Latte cord of equal length. Fold each piece in half, pull the loop through a stitch on the short edge, then pull the ends through the loop to tie it. Space the fringe evenly along both short ends.

7. Trim and Finish

Trim and Finish

Lay the runner flat, comb the fringe straight with your fingers and trim it to an even length. Weave in any loose ends and your runner is ready for the table.

8. Final Look

And done! The Ecru lace and Latte edging give the runner a warm, natural look that fits dining tables, sideboards and coffee tables alike.

Tips & Variations

  • Make it wider or narrower by changing the length of the foundation chain.
  • Add or remove rows to fit any table length.
  • Swap the colors: try a Latte body with an Ecru edging, or pick any other shade of the 2mm cord.
  • Make a few small squares with the same pattern to use as matching placemats or coasters.
